Daniel Robertson

Daniel H. Robertson, PhD, is a proven and experienced technical leader of innovation in information technology (IT), computational science and research.

At the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI), he is focused on defining and developing the institute’s computational analytics, digital and data science capabilities. He also has initiated multiple collaborations among industrial and academic partners focused on leveraging electronic health records and deep biological data to drive understanding in health-related problems.

Through these collaborations, Robertson has brought significant funding and visibility to the growing IBRI, including being a co-author with multiple other organizations on a Nature Medicine paper that was published in early January 2019.

Prior to the IBRI, Robertson spent 17 years at Eli Lilly and Company, where he progressed in his roles from individual scientist, director of the computational chemistry and structural biology group to finally being the senior director of research IT.

In his final role at Lilly, he led the IT team supporting discovery systems and processes across six global research sites and nine therapeutic areas. During this leadership role, Robertson restructured research IT to become a leaner, more efficient organization, reset the strategy supporting the discovery functions, delivered emerging new technology and analyses through informatics, and enhanced support for HPC, cloud and internal big data storage and analysis. Robertson also transformed the IT support for the Open Innovation Drug Discovery program to be the first high-performing DevOps team, which was recognized with an InformationWeek 500 award.

After earning his PhD, Robertson served as an NRC/NRL Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, and then held several scientific and staff positions at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) from 1993 through 2000. He last served as associate scientist and director of technical and administrative services and manager of the Facility for Computational Molecular Science at IUPUI before joining Eli Lilly and Company in 2000.

Robertson has published more than 70 papers in refereed journals, authored three invited book chapters, and conducted more than 65 professional/technical presentations. For a full list of Robertson's published research, click here.
